Celtic News and Events

The large Irish, Scottish and Welsh populations, which historically existed in the Lehigh Valley, make Bethlehem, Pennsylvania a natural location for the largest highland games and festival in North America. The proximity to New York City and Philadelphia make this a great place to spend some time and get in touch with your roots.

The first Celtic immigrants, who were of Scottish and Irish descent, arrived in the Lehigh Valley circa 1728 from the northern province of Ulster. Today, the Scottish, Irish, Welsh and Cornish remain a dominant force, comprising nearly 30% of the Lehigh Valley population.

Bethlehem, Pennsylvania has been the home to Celtic Cultural Alliance since 1986. At that time the goal of the founders was to create an event that symbolized the Celtic spirit and history, and to provide the impetus for an organization that focused on promoting Celtic culture. From that dream came the Celtic Classic. Twenty plus years later this organization has evolved into a vibrant organization internationally recognized for promoting and preserving Celtic Culture. Celtic Cultural Alliance is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization supported by over 500 volunteers, its board of directors and staff.

Staying true to its mission to promote and preserve the Celtic culture through education workshops, musical presentations and traditional competitions in athletics, piping and dance is what has enabled this dedicated group to continue to thrive.

While the annual calendar is filled with events in music, history and arts, it is the Celtic Classic that stirs the souls of the faithful. Each year the Celtic Classic brings the finest in Celtic arts, food, music, athletics, piping and more to eastern Pennsylvania. It is with great pride that Celtic Cultural Alliance presents this event without admission each year.

In 2007, over 265,000 visitors came to Historic Bethlehem to join in this celebration of all things Celtic. Now in its 21st year, preparations are underway to welcome visitors from around the world to this one of a kind event for 2008.
